in Los Angeles
Space is one of my favorite subjects to explore in tattooing. There’s so much to work with: the colors of distant nebulae, the darkness between stars, the surface of a planet, or an astronaut floating somewhere beyond Earth.
What interests me most is creating a sense of depth. I want a space tattoo to feel like you’re looking into another world, not just at a picture of one.
I’m Rinat Tattarin Mingazdinov, a tattoo artist based in Los Angeles. I focus on large-scale projects, including full sleeves, back pieces, and compositions that connect different areas of the body.

Here’s a selection of my space-inspired tattoos. I enjoy working with the contrast between dark space and bright details, using color, light, and texture to give the composition depth.
Every project has its own direction. Sometimes the focus is a single subject, like an astronaut or a planet. Other times, the surrounding cosmic environment becomes just as important.

Large-Scale Space Tattoos
I think space themes become especially interesting when there's enough room to develop the composition.
A full sleeve can bring planets, stars, and different cosmic environments together into one continuous piece. On the back, there's even more space to work with scale, perspective, and larger subjects.
I like planning the tattoo around the shape of the body rather than treating it as a flat picture. The placement of the main elements, the darker areas, and the transitions between them all matter.
A space tattoo can also become part of something bigger. If you're thinking about connecting an arm piece to the shoulder, chest, or back, we can consider that from the beginning.

From Nebulae to Astronauts
There are plenty of directions a space tattoo can take.
Some people love the colors and shapes of galaxies and nebulae. Others are drawn to astronauts, spacecraft, distant planets, or the strange landscapes of science fiction.
I like the freedom these subjects give me. A design can be realistic, surreal, or somewhere in between. We can work with recognizable objects or build a composition around something that doesn’t exist outside our imagination.
Science fiction also overlaps with other styles I enjoy. Futuristic structures and mechanical elements can take a space-themed design toward Biomechanical & Bioorganic Tattoos, while favorite characters or scenes from movies and video games belong to another part of my Pop Culture Tattoo work.
The important thing is finding a direction that works as a tattoo, not just as an illustration.

Color, Contrast & Depth in Space Tattoos
One of the things I enjoy about space tattoos is the freedom to work with light.
Deep blacks can make brighter areas stand out. Blues, purples, reds, and warmer tones can create the atmosphere of a nebula, while softer transitions help give planets and other objects their shape.
But more color doesn’t automatically make a better tattoo. I want the main subject to be clear, with enough contrast to separate it from the background.
Black and grey can be interesting for space themes too. Lunar landscapes, astronauts, and dramatic lighting can all work without a full-color palette.
